Mikey’s first woodworking projects were toy submarines and battleships, built in his parent’s basement in Illinois. He initially moved away from the flatlands to work for the wooden bike frame manufacturing company Sylvan Cycles. Later, he left a career in human-powered sanitation at worker-owned Pedal People Cooperative to develop his sideline carpentry work at the Heartwood School. There, he was relieved to discover the rich history of building with locally available, green timber and other natural materials. Mikey aspires to continue developing himself as a builder and craftsperson, while not losing sight of the challenges that face our communities.
Mikey has a degree in geography and geology from Macalester College. He is also a (mostly) recovered bicycle fanatic, who savors the slow road from A to B – especially when point B is a climbable crag.
