About TimberHomes Vermont

TimberHomes is a small, worker-owned and worker-managed design/build construction company with a focus on the beautiful craft of timber framing.  We build custom-designed barns, cabins, houses, carports, pavilions, and kiosks for clients within an hour radius of one of our shops located in Vershire, VT or Montpelier, VT.  Our buildings reflect our company values, which include soulful building practice, ecological responsibility, worker quality of life, and community/client involvement.  Employees are encouraged to participate in the day-to-day decision making involved in cooperatively managing the company and our dispersed organizational structure is designed to empower individuals to have authority over their own work.

Project Manager Job Description

Vershire, VT or Montpelier, VT

Position Summary
TimberHomes’ Vershire or Montpelier shop seeks a full-time (40 hours/week), long-term project manager or a full-time (40 hours/week), long-term project manager/carpenter to join our worker-cooperative with an immediate start.  The project manager could be based out of either shop.  A TimberHomes project manager’s primary responsibilities include: sales support, frequent communication with all project stakeholders, client services, material ordering, schedule creation, and other organizational tasks.  At TimberHomes, substantial site carpentry often happens May-December, and primary project manager responsibilities during this time include but are not limited to: frequent teamwork and communication with site lead carpenters, subcontractors, and clients; confirming material orders/deliveries; executing change orders; and ensuring smooth project conclusion.  TimberHomes will provide training to ensure proper orientation to TimberHomes systems and proficiency in all aspects of our company operations.

While prior experience with shop and site carpentry (timber framing, general carpentry, mobilization tasks, and installation) is strongly preferred, it is not required.  TimberHomes is interested in applicants who at the very least have a strong desire to learn carpentry skills.  For those with experience in carpentry, this position will still be project management focused, while flexing to encompass shop and/or site carpentry time based on the applicant’s existing skill set and company needs.

This position encompasses a “path to ownership,” as all long-term employees have the option to become owners following at least four years of employment and the accumulation of 6000 hours.  Ownership comes with financial benefits as well as responsibility for collaboratively making long-term decisions about the company.  Ideal candidates would have a genuine interest in working within our cooperative setting, and could see themselves actively participating in our shared decision making processes and taking on additional roles and tasks within the company.

Desired Skills and Competencies:

Ideal Experience and Our Company Culture
The ideal candidate would have project management experience in a construction-related field, possibly with some timber framing knowledge.  However, a background in other relevant management work requiring strong operations, organization, communication, documentation, and/or sales skills could be a sufficient substitute.  The candidate would be interested in living and working in the Vershire or Montpelier area for an extended period, ideally already with roots in the local community.

Our Timber Gnomes (as we call ourselves) are tight-knit; we try to maintain a steady flow of baked goods and some of us talk about our feelings at work.  We value diversity and inclusion, and welcome applications from anyone and everyone as long you have some management experience.  We’re proud to have many women and queer-identified carpenters working for TimberHomes.

Starting hourly wage will be based on experience.

To apply, please send an email to Annie ().  We will review applications on a rolling basis until the job is filled.

Vershire, VT or Montpelier, VT

Position Summary
TimberHomes’ seeks two full-time (40 hours/week), short-term shop and site carpenters to join our worker-cooperative with an immediate start and extending until at least November 2023, possibly later.  These carpenters would be based out of either our Montpelier shop or Vershire shop, and would flex to work on sites within an hour radius of both shops, based on company needs.  A Timberhomes carpenter’s primary responsibilities in the shop would include: timber framing, general carpentry (preparing trim, doors, window casings, stairs, etc), pre-raising and project mobilization tasks, and other projects as assigned.  Substantial site carpentry often happens May-December, and site carpenter responsibilities include but are not limited to timber frame raisings and installation of roofs, siding, floors, insulation, doors, windows, stairs, and other finish details.  While prior experience with shop and site carpentry skills is strongly preferred, it is not required and TimberHomes will train individuals on skills that are unfamiliar to them.
